“Imitation Milk”, They Called It. Ha!

I abhor the Got Milk? commercials attacking soy milk.

First of all, soy milk was NOT made to imitate milk.  It was extracted out of the soy thousands of years ago by the Chinese as a drink.  It could have been named “soy juice” or “soy drink” but instead soy milk caught on.

Secondly, if you go to Asia, people drink soy milk with mostly added sugar, or nothing added to the soy milk at all before consumption.  Only the products in America, for taste reasons or for sales reasons, additives were added for “nutritional purposes” or “taste purposes”.

Thirdly, milk’s got so much cholesterol, 24 mg a cup compared to 0 mg in soy milk.  The reason why there is cholesterol is because the cows processed the food to milk, and generally any animal products or byproducts have cholesterol.  Just know that it was meant for young calves, not human.

And then there is the omega 3 fatty acid.  Out of the essential fatty acids, omega 3 and omega 6, we consume a lot more omega 6 in our food nowadays because omega 6 is more stable and therefore as we consume more processed foods, we get more omega 6.  And we need omega 3.  Milk has to be enhanced provides 30 mg a cup of omega 3 compared to the same amount in enhanced soy milk.  So there is no difference in there.  If you really want to get omega 3, get some microalgae, eat some seaweed, because all the fish get their omega 3 from plants originally!

Lastly, did you mention calcium?  Well, I say have you heard about vegetables?  For every 1 mg of milk you get about 0.32 mg, but for every 1 mg of bok choy you get 0.53 mg calcium (data from the book “Becoming Vegan” by Brenda Davis, RD, and Vesanto Melina, MS, RD)!  You can consume far less for far more!  If you are carbon-conscious, you are set!  If you are water-conscious, you are set, too!  Green leafy foods can give you all the calcium you need!

Boo to Got Milk commercials!  Get your facts straight, Got Facts?!  Don’t let the stupid advertising attacks fool you!

Thanks for this. My favorite is “soy has ‘estrogen’ [isoflavones]”. Ummm… hello! Milk comes from post partum cows and contains actual estrogen and progesterone.

Good stuff! I could go on for hours about the absurdity of the Got Milk campaign haha
The whole thing is pretty creepy…and harmful too :/

Yeah! Creepy indeed and not educational at all. I wonder why they want to attack the soy milk industry? I think it’s because they feel threatened enough by soy milk =], I guess in that case I feel pretty good.
